NEW NEC SELECT SOLUTIONS FOR DESKTOP PUBLISHING; ALDUS SOFTWARE INTEGRATED
AND OPTIMIZED ON NEC SYSTEMS

Boxborough, Massachusetts, August 17, 1992--Complementing today's
introduction of the NEC Select Solutions program, NEC Technologies, Inc.
has introduced four NEC Select Solution systems for desktop
publishing--The Page Composer, The Graphics Professional, The Image Maker,
and The Power Publisher.

Created for page layout, design and illustration, and image processing
applications, NEC Select Solution systems for desktop publishing combine
Aldus software--PageMaker, Aldus FreeHand, and PhotoStyler--with NEC's
PowerMate 486SX/25i, 486/33i, and 486/50i desktop systems.

All NEC Select Solution system configurations are defined and configured in
NEC's software labs, in collaboration with Aldus, for optimum performance,
ease-of-use and greatest functionality. DOS and Windows parameter and
configuration files are defined, tuned and optimized for a particular
application and hardware platform. Other configuration adjustments include
sizing and positioning of the Windows permanent swap file on disk, proper
installation of device drivers, configuring optimum disk caching,
re-sizing Windows icons for easier viewing in high resolution modes and
logical grouping and layout of the Windows desktop. Applications are then
configured for the platform with all the necessary drivers, filters and
parameters pre-selected. The entire system environment is then factory
loaded onto the hardware and tested before customer shipment.

All NEC Select Solution systems for desktop publishing also can be made
Network Ready, whereby network hardware and Novell software are
pre-installed and configured for immediate use upon connection to the
network.

NEC Select Solution systems for desktop publishing are the result of a
joint effort between NEC and Aldus, through which engineers from both
companies worked closely to develop and certify each system, ensuring the
highest level of software/hardware integration possible. In addition, the
two companies have also agreed to provide joint sales and technical
training, and will combine resources for customer technical support. NEC
Select Solution systems feature free one-year, on-site service and
unlimited use of a toll-free telephone support center.

"With color becoming increasingly important in many desktop publishing
environments, NEC has paid particular attention to selecting, configuring
and color tuning both hardware and software components. Configurations
feature NEC's MultiSync FG series color monitors with brilliant, crisp
resolution and the patented AccuColor Control System, together with
high-speed video subsystems and color PostScript printers. NEC helps users
customize factory color calibration controls and techniques to achieve
custom color accuracy," said David Middleton, director of Solutions
Marketing at NEC Technologies, Inc. "The concept of color is an important
component of professional desktop publishing systems. As developer of a
line of color printers, the industry's leading color monitors, and the
first active matrix color notebook computer, it was a natural evolution
for NEC to parlay its expertise in color computing to the area of desktop
publishing."

"As professional graphics turns increasingly toward the computer, designers
and production pros are seeking well-integrated software and hardware
solutions," said Jim David, vice president of Aldus USA. "NEC Select
Solutions featuring Aldus software deliver powerful, ready-to-use
solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of the page composition
artist, the illustrator, the photo editor or retoucher, and the full
service design agency."

connected to an NEC MultiSync FG monitor and to adjust to the highest
possible refresh rate of that monitor for clear, flicker-free information
display.
