Apple Announces Safety Program For Early Production PowerBook 100 Models

CUPERTINO, California--September 16, 1992--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that customers owning some of its Macintosh PowerBook 100
notebook computers should return their units for minor circuit board
modification.

Apple has become aware of a malfunction that has occurred in only three of
the close to 60,000 PowerBook 100 units that could be affected by this
potential problem. The concern is traceable in part to an electrical short
that results in the melting of a small hole in the bottom of the system's
outer

In each of the three reported cases, no personal injury or property damage
has occurred.

While the chances of a safety problem are remote, Apple feels that
modification of the units is justified to remove any doubt. The short did
not in any way affect the performance of the PowerBook 100.

*** Only PowerBook 100 computers bearing serial numbers below SQ211xxxxxx
and SS216xxxxxx require modification. Units with serial numbers equal to
or greater than SQ211xxxxxx and SS216xxxxxx are not affected.

*** No PowerBook models other than the PowerBook 100 are affected.
Currently shipping versions of the PowerBook 100 also are not affected.

This condition cannot occur in any of the PowerBook 140, 145 or 170 models.
The component configuration in the PowerBook 100 that has contributed to
the malfunction is different from the component configuration of the
PowerBook 140,145 or 170.

Modification Procedure

Apple is asking its PowerBook 100 customers in the United States with the
specified serial numbers to contact Apple's dedicated PowerBook 100 Safety
Helpline at 1-800-572-1731 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday to
schedule modification of their system. Upon confirmation of serial
numbers, Apple will arrange for an express pick-up of the PowerBook 100
units, conduct the simple modification procedure at the company's Customer
Product Repair Center, and return the unit, again by express service.

Apple subsidiaries in Europe and Pacific regions will be communicating
specific information to their customers on how to return their PowerBook
units for modification.

The modification turnaround will be as quick as possible with a target time
of three business days. The modification procedure will be done at no cost
to the customer.

Apple's modification efforts are geared toward providing the highest
quality service and minimizing customer concern. Apple is dedicated to
ensuring that customers continue to receive the highest degree of
satisfaction from its products.
