Applied Engineering Announces Cellular Interface and Internal Voice Data
and Fax Solution for the PowerBook

Dallas, TX (October 19, 1992)--Applied Engineering announced today two new
enhancements for Apple Computer, Inc.'s Macintosh PowerBook--the Axcell
cellular interface and an internal voice/data/fax system, DataLink PB.

Axcell Cellular Interface

Axcell enables PowerBook users to connect any PowerBook voice, data or fax
modem to portable, transportable and mobile phones. Axcell is compatible
with phones from OKI, NEC and AT&T with more being added. It can interface
with virtually all Macintosh communications devices (data, fax and voice
modems) with a standard phone plug.

"PowerBook users are the people most in need of immediate information,"
says Robert J. Carroll, CEO and President of Applied Engineering. "Linking
the portability of the PowerBook with the immediacy of cellular
communications gives users a substantial advantage over their
competitors."

The advantages are not limited to business to business competition either,
according to Mr. Carroll. Emergency medical teams and others in the
service industry who need timely access to information have already
expressed early interest in the Axcell/PowerBook combination.

The Axcell interface box stands only about an inch high and four inches
long. It weighs just 3.5 ounces with the 9 volt battery installed. A small
LED on the face of the Axcell module keeps users informed about the
battery's power condition.

DataLink PB

DataLink PB is a multi-function PowerBook enhancement. It is a telephony
system (two-way phone/speaker phone/answering machine), a 14,400 bps send
and receive fax machine (with optional OCR) and a 14,400 bps (V.32bis)
data modem all internal to the PowerBook.

The DataLink PB voice interface allows you to use your PowerBook as a
standard phone, speaker phone and answering machine. The software includes
a full featured phone book with import/export, auto dial and 32K of note
space for each name. The word-to-number translation lets you dial letters.
For example, 1800-554-MACS is sent to the modem as 1-800-554-6227.

The answering machine lets you shuffle-play outgoing messages, record your
own message from the PowerBook, digitize incoming messages and memos, time
and date stamps the messages virtually everything available from today's
top of the line answering machines. In addition to all these features,
Caller ID and caller codes are supported so you can leave messages for
specific people. The Caller ID support automatically cross-references your
phone book(s) and displays the caller's file. The software will also keep
a log of incoming and outgoing calls with time, date and length of call.

The fax software is an improved version of the FAXstf send and receive
software. The beefed-up version supports 14,400 bps fax speed and optional
Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The software also supports group
faxes, time delayed faxes, custom cover pages, background faxing for both
send and receive and a fax log.

DataLink PB includes free data communications software and free online time
and memberships to various services such as America Online, CompuServe,
GEnie and NewsNet.

PowerBook power users can connect DataLink PB to cellular phones via
Applied Engineering's new Axcell interface and send and receive fax and
data as well as voice across cellular channels. Power users will have a
portable cellular fax, modem and answering machine for their cellular
phones.

"We feel that voice messaging capability is a vital part of personal mobile
communications," states Mr. Carroll. "Combine voice, data, and fax
capabilities with the Axcell cellular interface and PowerBook users have a
fully integrated, completely portable communications solution."

DataLink PB retails for $619 and the Axcell interface retails for $299. The
two together have a special introductory price of $849. The Applied
Engineering products are available from Ingram, Merisel and Tech Data and
through AE's 2,800 dealers including mail order and the CompUSA and
Computer City super stores. DataLink PB must be installed by an authorized
Apple dealer or by Applied Engineering.
