I/O Option For Single-Board Computer Needs No Back-Plane

September 14, 1992 -- Beverly, Massachusetts ... A series of IDE I/O boards
provides on-board control circuitry for industrial input and output
without the need for a back-plane. Available now from DDI, Inc., Series
2100 I/O Expander boards communicate through the IDE hard-drive interface.
The DDI boards are ideal for use in output applications for relay drives
or sensing input connections for pushbutton and limit switches.

Series 2100 boards communicate through an interface that already is
standard on most single board computers, precluding the need for separate,
plug-in I/O boards. This reduces the space requirements of embedded
control circuitry, by eliminating the need for the more costly STD or
PC-bus back-plane cards. A single IDE I/O expander board from DDI replaces
two to six PC or STD I/O bus boards at one-fifth the cost.

Currently available in prototype quantities, the model 2101 I/O expander
board from DDI, Inc. contains 16 solenoid drivers and 32 inputs. Typical
uses include sensing and control of contact closures, limit switches and
solid state sensors. Other DDI 2100 Series models are expected to
incorporate additional functions, such as isolated I/O's, motor drivers
and other input and output combinations. All Series 2100 boards require
only ribbon-cable connection hardware, and can be powered from the
single-board-computer's +5 and 12 volt power supply.

Five year old DDI, Inc. provides simple, low cost detection and response
solutions that switch external loads directly from PC or STD bus systems.
Other products, in addition to the IDE board products, are designed for
PC/104 systems. Today plug-in, board-level products from DDI are used in
process control, telecommunications, alarms and security monitoring,
communications, component testing, laboratory switching and many other
applications.
