NEC CONTINUES PRINTER PRICE/PERFORMANCE EMPHASIS WITH INTRODUCTION OF THE
SILENTWRITER MODEL 97

Boxborough, Massachusetts, October 26, 1992--Continuing its emphasis on
providing high performance at an affordable price, NEC Technologies, Inc.
today introduced The Silentwriter Model 97, a 10 page-per-minute (ppm)
PostScript language printer. The Silentwriter Model 97 is a fully
configured laser printer providing Macintosh and MS-DOS capability, Adobe
PostScript Language Level II, HP PCL 5 emulation, Sharp Edge Technology,
and an optional PostScript facsimile capability for a suggested retail
price of $2,149. The Silentwriter Model 97 will be on display during PC
Expo this week in Chicago.

"The Silentwriter Model 97 printer offers incredible value by providing
high print quality, easy multiple-platform networking, automatic emulation
switching and fax capabilities at a low price," said John McIntyre,
director of marketing for NEC's Printer Division. "Because of these
features and the fact that the Silentwriter Model 97 is two-thirds faster
than our popular Silentwriter Model 95, we expect it to be a hit with
small and medium-sized workgroups, especially those requiring
cross-platform compatibility."

High Print Quality

The Silentwriter Model 97 uses NEC's micro-fine toner to produce a rich,
black print density which provides consistent images across even the
largest fonts and most expansive graphics. Patented Sharp Edge Technology
further enhances print quality by eliminating jagged edges and producing
the print quality appearance of a 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) printer.
Thirty-five Adobe Type I scalable fonts enable users to choose different
fonts for correspondence, presentations or other professional documents.

Multiple-Platform Capability

Equipped with parallel, serial and AppleTalk interfaces, Adobe PostScript
language Level II software and LaserJet III (PCL 5) emulation, the
Silentwriter Model 97 printer provides the highest level of compatibility
with Macintosh, DOS and Windows applications.

Connectivity

The Silentwriter Model 97 printer even simplifies sharing among multiple
users in a work group or on a network--even between DOS-compatible and
Macintosh systems--with Automatic Interface Monitoring (AIM). AIM selects
the port that is active and allows automatic sequential printing from
multiple, individually connected or networked Macintosh or DOS-compatible
personal computers. NEC's optional LANCruiser adapter accommodates
connection to Novell/Ethernet networks.

The Silentwriter Model 97 also provides automatic switching between
PostScript language operation and LaserJet compatibility. Shipped with the
Silentwriter Model 97 or Model 95 printer, NEC's host resident Automatic
Emulation Switching software detects the nature of every print job and
automatically sets the printer to the appropriate mode of operation,
providing maximum DOS and Windows performance.

A PostScript language fax option allows users to send and receive original
quality Group III or PostScript language facsimiles from the desktop. This
option provides true remote printing capability when transmitting a print
job to another Silentwriter Model 97 or Model 95 printer, providing the
recipient with a high-quality, plain-paper document.

Expandability

In addition to a built-in 250 sheet letter cassette and 10 envelope feeder,
the Silentwriter Model 97 printer offers several options including a
face-up tray and 250-sheet legal and letter cassettes which provide a
total capacity of 500 sheets and an uninterrupted printing capability from
three selectable paper sources. Additional optional memory modules provide
up to 5MB of RAM for improved performance and font caching capabilities.
The Silentwriter Model 97 also has two industry standard font cartridge
slots, providing access to the entire library of HP-compatible typefaces.

Handling up to 10,000 pages per month, the Silentwriter Model 97 printer
also provides nearly twice the engine life of the Model 95.

The Silentwriter Model 97 printer will be available in mid-November through
NEC's extensive nationwide network of authorized resellers at a suggested
retail price of $2,149. The dealer-installable PostScript language fax
option has a suggested retail price of $599.
