MIRAMAR ANNOUNCES MACINTOSH CLIENT SUPPORT & PEER FUNCTIONALITY FOR
MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Personal MACLAN Connect for Windows Runs on All IBM PCs; Acts as Server for
Macintosh Applications Without Leaving Windows

March 31, 1993; SANTA BARBARA, CA -- Miramar Systems, Inc., a leading
publisher of Macintosh-to-PC connectivity software, today introduced
Personal MACLAN Connect for Windows, the first network operating system
(NOS) to allow Macs and Windows PCs to exchange data in a peer environment
on either Ethernet, AppleTalk and TokenRing network hardware.

Personal MACLAN allows Macintosh and Windows users to dynamically exchange
data across platforms, send E-mail, as well as print and share local disk
storage on a peer level, said Neal Rabin, Miramar president. Macintosh and
Windows users view each other's files in their own familiar data format
(i.e., Mac files are shortened to appear as 11-character DOS names;
Windows files appear on the Mac desktop as separate icons.)

"We've extended the benefits of Macintosh System 7 personal file sharing
directly to the PC desktop," noted Rabin. "Moving information between the
Apple Macintosh and Windows on an IBM PC is now as transparent as working
off your own local hard drive." Windows users control exactly where, when
and which Macintosh users can access their PC's. Personal MACLAN runs as a
Windows application, using limited system resources, making each PC's hard
disks, floppy drives, CD-ROM's, etc., dynamically available to the
Macintosh desktop.

Macintosh users rely on the standard AppleShare Chooser interface (similar
in some aspects to Windows Program Manager) to access Personal MACLAN. In
this manner, Mac users are shielded from unfamiliar DOS/Windows naming
conventions, said Rabin. Personal MACLAN also lets Mac users open PC files
and launch the corresponding application. For example, Microsoft Excel PC
file formats are fully compatible with the Mac version of Excel. Personal
MACLAN lets users define the XLS extension to appear on the Mac with the
Excel icon. Double-clicking on the icon opens the data file, launches
Excel on the Mac, and then translates the file via Excel.

Mac users can also access any locally connected or network printer
available on any Windows PC. Personal MACLAN works as a printer server on
the PC, directing Macintosh print jobs to shared printers, including HP
PaintJet, LaserWriter or HP LaserJet with a Post Script option. Third
parties, such as GDT, offer AppleTalk print driver software that supports
many popular non-PostScript print devices.

"Personal MACLAN Connect represents the first non-proprietary network
software to provide affordable, transparent connectivity between the Mac
and Windows, whether or not there is a PC LAN in place," stressed Rabin.
"Personal MACLAN also adds peer services to Macintosh and PC clients,
complementing any existing Macintosh services, such as Netware NLM or
Farallon Timbuktu." Supported LAN environments on the PC include Microsoft
Windows for Workgroups, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan Vines, Novell
Netware, IBM OS/2 LAN Server, Hayes LANStep and Artisoft LANtastic.

Personal MACLAN runs on Intel 386 and 486 PCs with a network interface card
(NIC). It is compatible with Windows 3.1 and above, as well as fully
compliant with AppleTalk Phase II and the AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP).
It can be used with any configuration of Macintosh and PC computers on a
network. Pricing is set at $199 for a single PC user, $999 for a ten-PC
user license, and $1999 for a 30-user license.
