Multi-Tech Adds 486 Technology To LAN/WAN Products

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--April 9, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a leading
data communications technology company, announced today that it is
enhancing its 386SX processor based MultiModemLAN and Single Board
Computer (SBC) line with 486SX compatible microprocessors. The new 486SX
compatible MultiModemLAN (model number MT1432ECT4) is priced at $2199, and
the SBC (model number MT486SLC) at $1395.

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "The increased processing
power offered by the new microprocessor in our MultiModemLAN and SBC means
compute-intensive applications can be done faster. Applications like
graphics, sorting databases and certain Windows-based applications such as
desktop publishing will be done more efficiently and quickly. This will
translate into smaller phone bills when remotely accessing LANs, because
it will take less connect time. In the case of remotely controlling a
Windows host, the increased power of the microprocessor will result in
smoother interaction between the remote site and host processors."

The new microprocessor is 486SX instruction set compatible with a 32-bit
internal/16-bit external data path, and will run DOS, Windows and UNIX.
With a 25 MHz maximum clock frequency it will run up to 2.4 time faster
that 386SX or 386SL processors at the same clock frequency. The processor
comes equipped with 2 megabytes of memory expandable to 16 using standard
4 Meg SIMMs.

The MT1432ECT4 MultiModemLAN is a networking modem that directly connects
to either 10BASE2 (Thinnet) or 10BASET (twisted pair) Ethernet segments on
Novell IPX/SPX LANS. The MultiModemLAN is equipped with a V.32bis/V.42bis
data modem which, can transmit data up to 57.6K bps and a Group 3/Class 2
fax modem that can send or receive faxes at 9600 or 14.4K bps with any fax
machine or fax equipped computer in the world. The MultiModemLAN can
accommodate a second modem via a standard 9-pin serial port (DB9
connector.) It comes bundled with MultiExpress data communications and
MultiExpress Fax Server software. The MultiModemLAN can operate as a fully
equipped one or two modem data/fax communications server.

The MT486SLC Single Board Computer (SBC) is equipped with two serial ports,
1 parallel port, floppy and hard disk controllers, and a VGA controller
providing 800 x 600 pixel density in a 16-color format. The SBC is
designed for use in Multi-Tech's MultiArray product line. The MultiArrays
are ISA segmented backplane units that can be used for a variety of
communications controller applications. A typical application for a
MultiArray is as a data/fax communications server on a Novell LAN. One
segment in the array would contain the server controller and multiport
serial cards for attaching modems. The remaining segments would contain
SBCs (e.g. MT486SLCs) which would act as host processors for remote
control applications. MultiArrays come bundled with MultiExpress data
communications software.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, manufacturer's reps, systems integrators, value-added
resellers (VARs) and retailers. Multi-Tech Systems Inc. can be contacted
