SYBASE AND APPLE PARTNER IN CLIENT/SERVER TOOLS INITIATIVE

Apple features award-winning Deft CASE product in Tools Initiative

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, April 5, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc. and Apple Computer, Inc.
today announced that Sybase is a partner in Apple's Client/Server Tools
Initiative. The Sybase/Apple partnership is based on the strength of
SYBASE's Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool, the SYBASE Deft
product. The Deft tool is a featured database design and analysis tool in
Apple's Client/Server Tools announcement. As a member of Apple's
client/server tools initiative, Sybase will enhance the Deft tool to
support key Apple technologies, including AppleScript.

Sybase is a leading vendor of enterprise client/server relational database
management systems (RDBMS), application development tools, administrative
tools, connectivity software and consulting services. Its database design
and analysis tool, the Deft product, commercially available since 1989, is
ideally suited for Apple's Client/Server Tools Initiative, which was
established to provide Apple customers with tools to build client/server
cross platform applications. The Deft tool is based on client/server
architecture and runs on the Macintosh computer with gateway products for
uploading database designs to UNIX and VAX/VMS servers. The Deft tool's
strength is in front-end CASE tool capabilities that support all the major
RDBMS products, including SYBASE, Oracle, Rdb, Ingres, Informix and DB2.
This unique ability allows organizations to maximize their existing
technology investments by standardizing on a single CASE tool across these
heterogenous environments.

The Deft product is recognized as the database design and analysis tool
that meets the critical productivity needs of RDBMS developers within the
on-line enterprise. The product has won several awards, including Digital
News & Review's 1992 Target Award and 1990's Editor's Choice Award. The
Deft tool streamlines the analysis and design stage of software
development. The Deft tool has the ability to automate the process of
capturing users' requirements, analyzing and designing the proposed
system, collecting data definitions, and documenting and implementing the
application.

Sybase and Apple made this announcement at the Apple Enterprise Computer
Conference (AECC) being held in San Francisco. Apple's Client/Server Tools
Initiative is designed to provide solutions for large corporate customers
designing client/server, cross-platform applications.

John Nauman, Enterprise Systems Division's Integration Technologies
business unit, said, "Good systems development starts with good design.
Sybase's Deft product is a comprehensive tool for doing design and
modeling in a client/server environment. Support of AppleScript in the
Deft product's upper CASE tool will enable integration amongst development
tools and will enable the Deft tool to play a role as a repository in
client/server development."

Stu Schuster, Sybase vice president of marketing, said, "We view the
Macintosh as an important development platform for client/server
computing. Many of our customers have bought Macintosh computers
specifically to develop cross-platform applications using the Deft tool.
Our objective in partnering with Apple is to increase the visibility of
the Macintosh and Deft product as important elements for client/server
computing."

The SYBASE Deft product runs on any Macintosh with 2.5 MB RAM, System 6.02
or later, and a hard disk.
